During 1901, the construction company Grahor and son’s submitted a proposal to the head of the City Construction Office, Milan Lenuci, for the arrangement of Franjo Josip Square (today King Tomislav Square). In 1903, Grahor’s company engaged Viktor Kova\u010di\u0107, who made several proposals, for the design of the square. However, the mayor of Zagreb, Milan Amru\u0161, proposed to call for tenders, so that during 1904, the City Building Office would consider Kova\u010di\u0107’s arrangement proposal and propose it for execution. But very quickly there was a new twist and it was decided to go ahead with the call for tenders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The competition for the decoration of King Franjo Josip Square was announced on October 21, 1904, with a deadline of April 1905. However, due to the death of Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer, the work of the competition jury is postponed until June 9. Four applications were submitted to the competition: two by Viktor Kova\u010di\u0107 (motto: “Vir I Vir II” and “Kocka”), and one each by the architect Stjepan Podhorski (motto: “April 1”) and the respected drawing teacher from the Trade School Marko Pero\u0161 (motto: “Who knows better, the field gave birth to him”). Since the tender program was poorly prepared, Kova\u010di\u0107 and Podhorsky initiated “an action that was supposed to be created so that the tender would not be accepted”, and to withdraw the tender grounds that had already been submitted. However, the “action” was not well prepared and things start to get out of control. In accordance with the “action”, Podhorsky immediately withdrew his work after the conclusion of the competition, but not Kova\u010di\u0107, who, wanting to get a job, renounced the agreement and continued with the competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The competition jury makes a decision by which Kova\u010di\u0107’s work under the motto: “Vir I.” and “Vir II.” awards the first prize. The second prize was awarded to Pero\u0161, and finally the third prize was awarded again to Kova\u010di\u0107 for his work under the motto “Dice”. However, the judging panel did not recommend any of the awarded grounds for performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
