Viktor Kova\u010di\u0107, with his “action” regarding the competition for the decoration of Franjo Josip Square (today King Tomislav Square), caused a revolt among his fellow architects, especially Stjepan Podhorski and Vjekoslav Bastl, who, at Kova\u010di\u0107’s persuasion, withdrew their works just before the conclusion of the competition. But on the other hand, this event initiated the idea of \u200b\u200bfounding the “Club of Croatian Architects”. Namely, on May 2, 1905, Kova\u010di\u0107, Bastl and Podhorsky met in Podhorsky’s studio at Zrinjski Square 15, giving their word that in the future they would not work against each other, and that in the future they would act jointly in matters of architectural opportunities, defending their reputation “and to recognize architecture as an art in Croatia.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    The approval of the government office for the start of the work of the “Club of Croatian Architects” (KHA) followed on April 14, 1906, with which the Club could begin its official activities. On this occasion, Kova\u010di\u0107 was asked to design the rules, access cards and memorandum of the club. The general assembly of the club was held on August 7, 1906. Vjekoslav Bastl, \u0106iril Metod Ivekovi\u0107, Viktor Kova\u010di\u0107, Stjepan Podhorsky and Edo Sch\u00f6n were present at the session. The number of KHA members was small and varied considerably over time. The core of the club consisted of: Podhorsky, Bastl, Kova\u010di\u0107, Sch\u00f6n and Ivekovi\u0107, and soon Hugo Ehrlich and Dioniz Sunko joined them. Architects Rudolf Lubynski (1908) and Svetomir \u0160imunec (1911) were also short-term members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      From the very beginning, KHA emphasized three fundamental principles of its activity: defense of class honor, promotion of architecture “as a special branch of art” and education. The club was particularly fierce against the interests of the construction lobby, advocating for the rights of independent architects. One of the important goals set by KHA was the care of historical and cultural heritage. The club made the most significant progress in the field of architectural competitions. From 1906 to 1914, club members were present at all important competitions. In that period, KHA members won 8 first prizes, 10 second prizes, 5 third prizes and 4 redemptions. However, KHA will not only be a passive participant in the competition, but an active creator of it. By 1908, KHA managed to establish itself socially, becoming the main protagonist of many events, which would go beyond the parameters of usual architectural events and acquire wider socio-cultural significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
