It used to supply water to the market on Luža in Dubrovnik. The fountain was designed by the Neapolitan builder Onofrio della Cava, after whom it was named. In the Middle Ages, it also had a religious meaning, because only Christians used it. In the immediate vicinity, there was also a Jewish fountain where the Jews of Dubrovnik were supplied with water, which was later transferred to Brsalje. Onofrio’s small fountain was restored and returned to its old place on the day of Dubrovnik’s patron saint St. Vlaha, on February 3, 1996, and escaped destruction and shelling during the siege of Dubrovnik during the Homeland War (1991 – 1995). The area next to the Little Onofrio’s Fountain served as the stage for the Dubrovnik Summer Games, where Držić’s Novela from Stanac was successfully performed.

Živko Bačić, 2004.
Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia
Photo archive of the Conservation Department in Split

The conservators and the eKultura team of the Ministry of Culture and Media thank you for your attention!

[20
