Hrvatska Kostajnica, a city and the center of the city administrative area in Sisak-Moslavina County, Banovina, is located on the left bank of the Una, 48 km southeast of Sisak. The city has 2,127, and the city administrative area has 2,756 inhabitants (2011). It was mentioned for the first time in 1258 in the document of Bela IV. (Costonicha) The medieval fortress has existed since the 15th century. century (castellum Kosstanicza). In the XV. and the first half of the 16th century in the possession of the Croatian noble families Frankapana and Zrinski. Under the Ottoman rule (from 1556) it became a strong border stronghold and the headquarters of the captaincy (from 1578). After the liberation from the Turks in 1687, it was included in the composition of the Banska Krajina as the center of its most important Kostajnica Captaincy (1689\u20131809), then in Napoleon’s Illyrian Provinces (1809\u201315) and the Military Krajina (1815\u201381). After 1918, it was the seat of the district of the same name. Animal husbandry and wood industry are developed in the city. She died in the Homeland War (1991). The remains of the baroque fort, church and monastery, as well as residential buildings and the economy, were restored after the liberation (August 1995).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Old town Kostajnica<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The old town of Kostajnica was built on the island formed by Una and Unica and protected the suburbs that were built on the northern side of the river. It was mentioned for the first time in 1420. There is a round bastion in the south, a pentagonal tower in the west, and the oldest quadrangular tower in the north. It was built in the shape of a pentagon on a stone foundation with an entrance on the eastern side. The old town of Kostajnica is one of the most important fortified medieval towns in Croatia. It is a rare example of a relatively well-preserved fortification on a projecting open position on a river island. It has great historical and architectural value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Church and monastery of St. Anthony of Padua<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Church and monastery of St. Anthony of Padua are in a prominent position in the center of the historic center of Hrvatska Kostajnica, opposite the old town and the historic crossing of the Una river. The church with its facade together with the road intersection and the bridge forms the center of old Kostajnica. The Baroque complex consists of a one-nave hall church and a one-story monastery wing that is connected vertically to the church, at the level of the sanctuary and the sacristy. The complex was damaged in the Dom. war, and in 1997, the restoration began, where care was taken to respect and preserve its original construction and materials as much as possible. The restoration was completed in 2003.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
