Sisak old town

The old town in Sisak is located at the entrance of the Kupa to the Sava. It was built from 1544 to 1550. The construction of the fort was led by the Zagreb Chapter for defense against the Turks. At the invitation of the Zagreb Chapter, it was built by the Italian builders Petar od Milan, Dominik de Brescia and Petar de Castellonuovo with local craftsmen. The fort has a regular geometric ground plan in the shape of a triangle with round corner towers for heavy artillery. It was built strictly functionally, without decorative elements. The five-sided bastion built later north of the fortress creates an outer courtyard, which is bounded by a wall with low buildings, and together with the basic triangle forms a rhombus shape.

Church of the Holy Cross

Parish Church of the Holy Cross in Sisak, located in the middle of the town on the square by the bridge over the Kupa, is a one-nave Baroque building. It was consecrated in 1765. The restoration carried out after the earthquake in 1911 gave it its present appearance in the spirit of art nouveau. The main facade facing the square is divided by pilasters, cornices and oval windows. A high belfry (1760) is located sideways along the facade. The church’s inventory is partially preserved (pencil, communion bench, sprinkler, candlesticks, condyles, paintings, marble statues of St. Francis de Sales and St. Andrew from the Zagreb Cathedral by Franja Robb from 1733). Church of St. The cross is considered the most significant sacred monument in the area of Sisak.Source: Register of Cultural Properties of the Republic of Croatia – Church of the Holy Cross
